Adult Birthday Party Ideas That Beat Standing Around
For a 30th, 40th, 50th or 60th, the best party idea is an activity adults actually want to do with a drink in hand: easy, social and a little competitive, so the night isn't just small talk.

How it works at a birthday party
- Personalized screens. "Happy 40th, Mike" and a birthday leaderboard are included.
- The guest of honor sets the score to beat. Everyone else tries to top it all night.
- Crown a champion at the toast or before the cake comes out.
- Anyone can play. Golfers and non-golfers are on an even field, which makes the trash talk more fun.
Backyards, garages, basements and venues
- Garage or basement parties: a smooth concrete or finished floor with about 6 × 15 ft and a standard outlet is all it needs.
- Backyard parties: set it up under a tent, pavilion or covered patio on a smooth, close-to-level surface. It must stay protected from rain.
- Breweries, bars and event venues: most standard flooring works, and setup takes under 15 minutes.
- Bachelor parties and tailgates: same rules. Keep it covered and on a smooth surface.

Other adult birthday party ideas
A backyard bar or signature cocktail
A named drink for the guest of honor gives people a gathering point. It pairs well with an activity nearby.
A decade theme
Music, decor and dress from the birth year give the night a hook, but it depends on guests committing to it.
Food trucks
Handles a big crowd without the host cooking. Book early, since good trucks fill up on weekends.
A DJ or live music for later
Start social, then bring the music in as the night builds.
